Information on the Island of Skopelos
Skopelos is much larger than neighbouring Alonissos but offers a similar lush green beauty with
carpeted hillsides of pine forests, olive groves and plum orchards that sweep across the island and, in some places, all the way down to the island’s wonderful beaches and pretty coves where the waters are invitingly crystal blue, emerald green and stunningly clear. The island is characterised by these magnificent beaches and verdant hillsides but also by its charming harbour side capital, SkopelosTown. The atmosphere of this beautiful town emanates from the steeped, narrow, cobbled streets that overflow from the old town onto the picturesque harbour front where island life continues, much as it has done for centuries, via the water, with fishing boats, passenger ferries and, more latterly, colourful yachts and private cruisers coming and going daily. A wide choice of appealing tavernas and cafes sit just behind the water front from where the maze of wonderfully atmospheric streets filled with quaint ‘town’ houses, their overhanging balconies colourfully adorned with bright flowers, numerous churches, and nteresting little shops begin. You could spend hours exploring this lovely town and will find it drawing you back again and again during your stay.

The only other town of any size on the island is Glossa, situated high up on the northwest side of the island and easily reached by car or local bus. Glossa’s streets are similarly appealing with steep narrow streets, pretty houses and wonderful sea views, but it is a much more low-key little place where the inhabitants are predominantly local rather than tourists. Most of the other villages on the island are smaller but similarly picturesque built into the hillsides, surrounded by beautiful green forests and wonderful views.
The island is easy to explore and there is enough to keep you busy for a week or more if you can tear
yourself away from the stunning beaches and inviting translucent water. Hire a car for a day or two and get off the beaten track to discover its lush interior and beautiful beaches; set out on foot and
experience its fantastic nature close up; wander the atmospheric narrow streets of Skopelos town before enjoying a lazy lunch or an evening cocktail overlooking the colourful harbour; join a boat trip
to the Marine park or leave the island for a day and discover the delights of Alonissos or Skiathos.
If you find it difficult to decide between these two wonderful islands why not combine a stay on both
with a week in each. Alonissos is idyllic for doing very little whereas Skopelos will tempt you to be a
little more energetic in between days languishing on its outstanding beaches!
