Palekastro sits amidst a very lovely and little developed region that is known locally as the ‘hidden Crete’. Here you can find some of the most unspoilt landscapes on the island; wild rugged mountains, dramatic craggy coast lines, beautiful natural beaches, acres of olive groves and a profusion of traditional villages virtually untouched by the ‘hand of time’. We wanted our accommodation here to reflect this unspoilt beauty and we think the Amalia Apartments do just that. Perched on a small hill just outside the village, magnificent views sweep across green hillsides dotted with olive groves to the wide blue bay of Kouremenos, one of a choice of tranquil beaches found close by.

These four maisonettes and two studios make simple but comfortable accommodation for exploring this peaceful, lovely place. All are equipped with a double bed, a combined kitchen/living room and a shower room. The maisonettes have a balcony on the upper level and a terrace. The studios are all on one level with a front patio. Pretty gardens furnished with sun beds and a BBQ corner sit at the front of the apartments.

Most facilities, including a handful of excellent tavernas, can be found in the village, reached in just five minute’s by car. There’s also a choice of attractive beachside tavernas situated close by that offer fresh fish and tasty regional dishes. If you occasionally want a little more life the harbour town of Sitia, situated twenty minutes away by car, comes alive in the evening with locals and visitors alike enjoying the waterside promenade and its tavernas. If you can drag yourselves away from the beauty right on your doorstep Palekastro makes an excellent base for exploring the many wonders of ‘hidden Crete’. The beautiful palm forest of Vai, the 14th century monastery of Toplou, the Minoan palace of Zakros, the dramatic ‘Deads Gorge’ and the brilliant blue water of Xerokampos bay can all be discovered from Amalia.
